Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi has criticised the Narendra Modi-led central government strongly for how it is handling the ongoing border dispute with China. In his remarks to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Gandhi addressed the matter and called the state of affairs a “disaster,” claiming that Chinese forces had taken control of a sizable chunk of Indian land in Ladakh.
Rahul Gandhi Criticises PM Modi’s China Strategy
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, claimed that Chinese troops have taken control of around 4,000 square kilometres of Indian land near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh. Describing the situation as a severe failure of the current government, Gandhi said, “If you consider having 4,000 square kilometres of Indian territory under Chinese occupation as handling something well, then maybe… but I believe it’s a disaster. We have Chinese soldiers in an area the size of Delhi in Ladakh.”
Hypothetical Comparison to Highlight Concerns
In his speech, Gandhi used a hypothetical scenario to highlight how serious the issue is, questioning the government’s inaction. He asked how the United States would react if a neighbouring country occupied a similar amount of American land. “Would any U.S. president be able to get away with saying they’ve handled that well? So, I don’t think PM Modi has dealt with China properly. There’s no justification for Chinese troops being in our territory,” he argued.
Border Standoff with China
The border standoff between India and China began in May 2020, when Chinese forces attempted to change the status quo along the LAC in eastern Ladakh. Tensions escalated further after the deadly Galwan Valley clash, which resulted in casualties on both sides. In response, India increased its military presence along the LAC, with over 50,000 troops stationed to counter any further advances by Chinese forces.
