A Gujarat court on Thursday rejected Rahul Gandhi’s request to stay his conviction in a defamation case stemming from his “Modi surname” remark. Rahul Gandhi cannot be re-elected as a Member of Parliament. The Congress leader had urged for his conviction to stay while he appealed against a court order sentencing him to two years in prison in the case.
The session court had heard both sides on April 13 and reserved the verdict for April 20. If the court stayed his conviction, Rahul Gandhi could have gained his MP status again.
Rahul Gandhi disqualified as MP
Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as an MP a day after a metropolitan magistrate court in Surat sentenced him to two years in jail in the case filed by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi. Rahul Gandhi had said that the trail court treated him harshly after being influenced by his status as an MP.
A Surat Court on March 23 convicted Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case against him over his alleged ‘Modi surname’ remark. He was granted bail immediately.
“Accused Rahul Gandhi is held guilty … and sentenced to two years simple imprisonment,” Harish Varma, the chief judicial magistrate of Surat, said in his order.
