The party claims that the BJP-led government is attempting to obstruct the leader’s visit to the ethnically divided state. He eventually boarded a helicopter to travel to Churachandpur, where he will meet those who have been displaced from their homes and visit relief camps.
Rahul Gandhi’s Visit to Manipur Met with Obstruction as Police Halt Convoy
While many people opposed Gandhi’s trip, according to the BJP, he was requested to take a helicopter instead since he was “stubborn” about taking the road. Gandhi’s caravan was halted by police at Bishnupur, approximately 20 kilometres from the state capital, as it was making its way to Churachandpur to visit relief camps in the area. He had arrived in Imphal from Delhi earlier in the day. According to police officials, the caravan was stopped out of concern for local unrest. “There is a security threat. We cannot take the risk of allowing Rahul Gandhi to proceed,” a senior police official said.
Congress Accuses BJP Governments of Employing ‘Autocratic Methods’ to Halt Rahul Gandhi’s Compassionate Outreach
The BJP governments at the state and federal levels, according to the Congress, are allegedly employing “autocratic methods” to obstruct Gandhi’s visit. “The double-engine disastrous governments are using autocratic methods to stall a compassionate outreach by Shri Rahul Gandhi. This is totally unacceptable and shatters all constitutional and democratic norms,” Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge tweeted. “He is going there to meet the people suffering in relief camps and to provide a healing touch in the strife-torn state,” he said.
BJP Questions Rahul Gandhi’s Decision to Forego Helicopter
Keisham Meghachandra, the party’s state president, claimed that Chief Minister N Biren Singh gave the order to stop Gandhi’s convoy because “everyone was welcoming him.” Gandhi’s two-day journey to Manipur, according to senior Congressman Jairam Ramesh, is in keeping with the Bharat Jodo Yatra, he said. Ramesh said in a tweet, “The Prime Minister may choose to remain silent or be inactive but why stop Rahul Gandhi’s efforts to listen to all sections of the Manipuri society and provide a healing touch?” The BJP, however, questioned Gandhi’s decision to not use a helicopter to travel to Churachandpur.

“Rahul Gandhi’s Manipur visit was vehemently opposed by many Civil Society Organisations & Student Unions in Manipur. Keeping this in mind the administration requested Rahul Gandhi to take helicopter to Churachandpur. Looking into the sensitive situation to “Understand” is more important than being “Stubborn” for petty political gains,” BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra Tweeted. With the quip “chopper ticket costs only Rs 2,500,” the BJP retaliated, accusing Rahul Gandhi of being “stubborn” for “petty political gains.”
