Rajnath Singh: A highly agitated Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday picked up cudgels against senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. Singh made out a strong case for him to seek an apology in front of the House for his uncharitable remarks made in the United Kingdom during his recent visit there.
“Rahul Gandhi, who is a member of this House, insulted India in London. I demand that his statements should be condemned by all members of this House and he should be asked to apologise before the House,” he stated.
‘Lok Sabha should collectively condemn remarks’
The minister stood up during the second part of the Budget session and as Deputy Leader of the House, pointedly remarked that Rahul had made every effort to “defame” India in London through his jibes on Indian democracy.
He clearly enunciated the point that the Lok Sabha should collectively condemn his remarks and he (Rahul) in turn should tender an apology. Singh made a strong charge that the Congress leader made out a case for foreign intervention in the internal affairs of the country. This, he said, was unacceptable and should be condemned in no uncertain terms.
PM Modi attacks Rahul Gandhi
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi too had targeted Rahul Gandhi. In a veiled attack, he had made an assertion that no power in this world can harm India’s democratic traditions. He said that the structure of Indian democracy is under “brutal attack”.
He drew a reference to 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara, and said it was a downright insult to the people of Karnataka, the country’s avowed traditions and its citizens.
During an event organised by Opposition Labour Party MP Virendra Sharma in the House of Commons complex recently, Rahul had vociferously remarked that opposition parties in India are not allowed to debate issues in the House. He also used the allegory of a faulty microphone in the room to make his point.
“Our mikes are not out of order, they are functioning, but you still can’t switch them on. That’s happened to me a number of times while I am speaking,” the 52-year-old MP from Wayanad told the gathering.
