The ruling government named special director Rahul Navin as in-charge director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) till the name of the regular director is announced or until further orders on Friday. Sanjay Kumar Mishra was replaced by Rahul Navin after he resigned on Friday, in accordance with a deadline set by the Supreme Court.
Until further notice, Rahul Navin, an IRS officer from the 1993 batch, serves as the ED’s acting director. Rahul Navin had previously held the position of Chief Vigilance Officer at the ED headquarters.
“The President is pleased to order the cessation of tenure of Shri Sanjay Kumar Mishra, IRS(IT:1984) as Director of Enforcement in the Enforcement Directorate on 15.09.2023 and placing Shri Rahul Navin, IRST:1993) Special Director, Enforcement Directorate as in-charge Director, Enforcement Directorate till appointment of a regular Director or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” the Ministry of Finance said in the order.
Sanjay Kumar Mishra steps down
Since the Centre was reluctant to allow Sanjay Kumar Mishra to retire, the nomination of the director of the Enforcement Directorate was closely scrutinised. He was given a two-year appointment by the government to lead the law enforcement agency in 2018, but the administration continued prolonging it through procedural amendments.
The Centre also introduced an act at this time that permitted the ED and CBI directors to hold their positions for up to five years. Sanjay Kumar Mishra’s continued employment as director of ED was contested in the Supreme Court on multiple occasions, and the government was removed from the case during the hearing.
“Are we not giving a picture that there is no other person and the entire department is full of incompetent people?” the Supreme Court bench noted.
ED has been highly active in his reign against politicians, primarily Opposition parties. Numerous money laundering instances were discovered by the law enforcement agency, and as a result, some politicians are currently being held in jail for alleged financial crimes.
