The railway ministry will instal CCTVs inside more than 15,000 coaches as part of a significant order worth Rs 705 crore in an effort to increase the safety of passengers, particularly women and children. This will cover all trains in the nation and include 14, 387 cars on deluxe trains like the Rajdhani, Duronto, and Shatabdi as well as passenger trains like the EMU, MEMU, and DEMU. The ministry previously reported to Parliament that 2,930 rail coaches had been equipped with CCTVs. Thus, the current order will be nearly five times larger.

The railways intends to cover all 60,000 or more coaches with CCTV surveillance to prevent privacy invasions at the doors, vestibule area, and aisle area. Additionally, these IP-based CCTVs will incorporate systems for facial recognition and video analytics. They will make it possible for coaches to be operated and observed remotely from RPF posts, divisional, and zonal headquarters. Each coach must be equipped with at least two panic buttons, which, when pressed, will notify the closest RPF post or data centre.
CCTV requirements for train coaches
The railways want CCTV systems installed inside carriages to make facial recognition easier and provide high-resolution photographs that can clearly identify the target person. It is desirable to be able to recognise faces in low light, particularly at night in the aisle area of the coaches. According to the railways, the system should be able to tolerate shocks and vibrations. CCTV cameras are present in every modern train, including the Vande Bharat and Tejas.
