Rain in Himachal Pradesh Causes ₹10000 Crore Loss, 74 People Dead; Miraculous Rescue of 1000 from Flood-hit Kangra

Himachal Pradesh: Amid the aftermath of heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh, the number of lives lost has surged to 74, with an additional fatality discovered amidst the debris of a Shiva temple in Shimla. Officials reported two more casualties in the Chamba district on Thursday.

Numbers continue to soar

Among these fatalities, 21 tragically occurred due to three significant landslides solely within Shimla – striking the Shiva temple in Summer Hill, as well as Fagli and Krishnanagar areas. Presently, concerns persist for the safety of eight people who are apprehended to be trapped beneath the remains of the temple.

In the Chamba district, an additional two fatalities attributed to rain were documented, causing the overall death toll to rise to 74 within the last four days. This information was relayed by the state’s emergency operation center. Over the course of three consecutive days starting from Sunday, the state experienced substantial rainfall. Since the monsoon commenced on June 24, a total of 217 individuals have lost their lives in incidents connected to rain in Himachal Pradesh.

CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Infra damage

On Thursday, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu toured the regions in the state that were impacted by the rain and floods. He indicated that it would take approximately a year to reconstruct the infrastructure that was harmed due to the intense monsoon rains. He further assessed that the financial toll from the two destructive episodes of heavy rainfall – one occurring this week and the other in July – amounts to around Rs 10,000 crore.

Army and Rescue teams continue to evacuate

Ongoing rescue efforts persist at the landslide locations within Shimla. As of now, SP Gandhi has officially confirmed that a collective count of 14 bodies has been recovered from Summer Hill, along with five from Fagli and two from Krishnanagar.

The combined efforts of the Indian Army, Air Force, and other rescue teams have successfully evacuated 309 individuals from the flood-stricken vicinity in Fatehpur of Kangra district, along with Pong Dam in Indora. In the course of the past three days, a significant total of 2074 people have been safely rescued from these regions.
