Rajnath Singh UK Visit: On Wednesday in London, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid a visit to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Right now, the Minister of Defence is in Great Britain on a formal visit. This is the first time in more than 20 years that an Indian defence minister has visited the UK in their current capacity.
Trinity House Summit
Defence Minister Singh and British counterpart Grant Shapps attended the Trinity House in London earlier in the day for the India-UK Defence Industry CEOs Roundtable. “Raksha Mantri Shri @rajnathsingh and his British counterpart Mr. @grantshapps attended the India-UK Defence Industry CEOs Roundtable at Trinity House in London,” Defence Minister’s official handle on ‘X’ posted.
2025 Maritime Collaboration
Along with a proposal for the Carrier Strike Group to visit the Indian waters in 2025, the UK announced intentions to send its Littoral Response Group to the Indian Ocean Region later this year. With Indian military, both will work and train. UK Defence Secretary Shapps made the announcement. During the Defence Minister’s visit to the nation, the UK and India also pledged to keep fostering their relations.
Unprecedented Defence Collaboration
According to an official announcement, Defence Secretary Shapps welcomed Singh to the UK and the two leaders agreed on unprecedented levels of defence collaboration, a step that reflects the rising importance of the strategic relationship between the UK and India.
Future defence collaboration between the two countries was also considered, including instructor exchanges, knowledge sharing, and cooperative exercises. It further stated that these actions expand upon the extensive strategic alliance envisioned in the 2030 India-UK strategy, which was unveiled in 2021.
Sophisticated Military Drills
According to the release, the UK and India will also start conducting increasingly sophisticated military drills in the upcoming years, leading up to a historic cooperative exercise that will take place before the end of 2030. These exercises will support the two countries’ shared objectives of safeguarding vital trade routes and maintaining the global rules-based system.
Emphasis on growing global challenges
Defence Secretary Shapps said, “There is absolutely no question that the world is becoming increasingly contested, so it’s vital that we continue to build on our strategic relationships with key partners like India. Together we share the same security challenges and are steadfast on our commitment to maintaining a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific.”
“This relationship is going from strength-to-strength, but we must continue to work hand-in-hand to uphold global security in light of threats and challenges that seek to destabilise and damage us”he added.
