Raksha Bandhan 2023: Raksha Bandhan, the cherished festival that signifies the sacred bond between siblings, will span two days this year on August 30 and 31. Due to the presence of the Bhadra Nakshatra, Rakhi isn’t tied during this specific period, leading to the extension of the Raksha Bandhan celebrations over two days. According to the belief, Shurpanakha had tied a rakhi to Ravana during the Bhadra Nakshatra, and subsequently, Ravana faced his downfall. Raksha Bandhan being a religious festival, every ritual performed holds a significant religious reasoning behind it, making it essential to understand. As mentioned earlier, it’s advised to avoid tying rakhi during the Bhadra Nakshatra. Similarly, there are certain guidelines for arranging the plate and specific protocols for removing the rakhi. Let’s explore what steps to follow for removing the sacred rakhi.
What to do with your Rakhi post Raksha Bandhan?
Rakhi holds more significance than being a mere fashion accessory; it is a “rakshasutra,” a protective thread, blessed by divine forces to safeguard the brother. In the Mahabharata, Draupadi tore a piece of her saree to bind Krishna’s finger when it was wounded. This act established the tradition of the Raksha Sutra, which sisters tie during Raksha Bandhan, believed to be divinely blessed for protection.
After removing the Rakhi or Rakshasutra, avoid discarding it casually. Treat it with respect. Instead, wrap the rakhi in a red cloth and store it in a designated place where personal belongings are kept, maintaining cleanliness. When the time comes to tie a new rakhi the following year, consider disposing of the old one thoughtfully. You can either release it in a river or pond or bury it near a tree’s roots. When the new rakhi is tied, follow the same practice of wrapping it in the cloth and storing it.
Should you dispose of Rakhi in the river?
However, it’s important to note that if the rakhi accidentally breaks while being removed, it should be promptly disposed of in a river; it’s advisable not to keep it within the house. By adhering to the proper practice of preserving rakhi, the bond between siblings is secured. Additionally, this practice is believed to infuse positive energy into the household.
