Raksha Bandhan 2023: The festival of Rakshabandhan usually falls on the day of Shravan Shukla Purnima. However, this year, due to the influence of the Bhadra period, the festivities will span two days, from August 30 to 31. Sisters planning to tie the Rakhi on their brother’s wrist on August 31st need to pay special attention to the auspicious timing.

As a matter of fact, the conclusion of Rakshabandhan coincides with the morning of August 31st, which is also the date of the full moon. Hence, it is essential to complete the Rakhi tying ceremony before the conclusion of the Sawan Purnima period. For this year, the full moon phase will commence at 10:59 AM on August 30th and conclude at 07:05 AM on August 31st. Concurrently, on August 30th, the Bhadra period will also commence, lasting until 9:02 PM. This Bhadra Kaal extends for approximately 10 hours, during which tying Rakhi is traditionally avoided.

However, in specific circumstances, Rakhi can be tied within the window of 05:32 PM to 06:32 PM, which falls within the tail end of the Bhadra period. If you intend to celebrate Rakshabandhan on August 31st, make sure to tie the Rakhi on your brother’s wrist before 7:05 AM today. This marks the conclusion of both the Sawan Purnima date and the significance of Rakshabandhan. Regardless, it is recommended to tie the Rakhi before this specified time.
On Rakshabandhan, the Rakshasutra that you tie should consist of three threads: red, yellow, and white. Alternatively, it should have red and yellow threads. Adding sandalwood to the Rakshasutra enhances its auspiciousness. In case of unavailability, you can also tie a Kalava with heartfelt devotion.
