The wife of an IAS officer who was murdered said that the death sentence for gangster-turned-politician Anand Mohan Singh, who was found guilty of killing a Dalit bureaucrat in Bihar, was “good” because people would fear criminals if he was hanged. She also expressed disappointment at the Bihar government for changing prison rules to facilitate the Rajput strongman’s release after 15 years in prison.
She said that the choice is sending “wrong signals” to society and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step in and persuade Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, to reverse the choice.
“Not a good decision. We were not happy with the life imprisonment decision earlier but now he is being released and entering politics. We don’t agree with the move. It’s in a way encouraging the criminals. It sends out a message that you can commit a crime, and go to jail but then get freed and join politics. The death penalty was good,” wife of Dalit bureaucrat G Krishnaiah Uma Krishnaiah, told NDTV.
Then, G Krishnaiah, the district magistrate for Gopalganj, was killed by a mob that Anand Mohan Singh is accused of inciting. A mob protesting with the body of Chhotan Shukla, another gangster-politician of Anand Mohan’s party, who had been killed the day before, attacked Mr. Krishnaiah. He was pulled from his company car and lynched.
Ms. Krishnaiah referred to the choice as having a “selfish motivation” and said it would encourage criminal activity. She added that “nobody would like” the political choice.
She stated that she will follow G Krishnaiah’s batchmates’ and the IAS association’s suggestions for the next course of action, who are debating it and will make a decision within a week.
Anand Mohan Singh responded to the news earlier today by making it apparent that he is prepared to return to the world of active politics. Anand Mohan Singh’s impending release from prison has generated a tremendous controversy in Bihar.
In 2007, a lower court sentenced Singh to death, but the Patna High Court subsequently reduced the penalty to life in jail. He has spent 15 years behind bars.
The strongman, whose son is an MLA for Lalu Yadav’s RJD, is one of 27 convicts who will be freed as a result of changes made to prison regulations by the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government, which allows individuals convicted of killing a public servant while they were on duty to receive a reduced sentence.
Singh responded to the commotion surrounding his impending release by saying, “There are many in BJP who have also said that I am being wronged and that I should be released. You can’t stop anyone from saying anything.”
In retaliation, the ruling JDU has emphasised that Singh has served out his prison sentence and that the Nitish Kumar administration does not make a distinction between “aam” and “khaas” citizens.
