New Delhi: In anticipation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s upcoming visit, the Australian High Commissioner, Barry O’Farrell, said on Monday that Australia remains unwavering in its respect for India’s sovereignty. He further emphasized that the Khalistan referendum has no legal basis within Australia, reflecting the country’s firm stance against suspected Khalistani elements.
No legal standing: Australian High Commisioner
Barry O’Farrell said, “Respect for Indian sovereignty is unwavering. The so-called Khalistan referendum call has no legal standing in Australia.” Continuing further, he said “Most appalled to see temples being targeted, police are active and continue to be active to deal with those responsible.”
Recent incidents of suspected Khalistani supporters vandalizing temples and allegedly attacking the Indian Consulate in Brisbane have raised concerns of a possible rise in separatist activity. While attacks on Indian residents in Australia have occurred in the past, the vandalism of an Indian government institution has alarmed authorities and prompted further investigation of the situation.
The Honorary Consul of India in Brisbane discovered a Khalistan flag attached to the office, which was immediately reported to the Queensland Police. Meanwhile, in January, a historic temple in Melbourne was vandalized, with volunteers threatened by Khalistani supporters. The group demanded that pro-Khalistan slogans be raised during the temple’s ‘havan’, and warned of dire consequences if their demands were not met. These developments have sparked concerns about the activities of Khalistani supporters in Australia.
