RLD chief

Chandrashekhar Azad, the co-founder of the Bhim Army and National President of Azad Samaj Party (Kanshiram), was shot by unidentified assailants in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh on June 28, leading to massive outrage among his supporters. On Friday, Bhim Army supporters gathered at the Jantar Mantar to protest against the deadly attack on the outfit’s chief, demanding Z-plus security for him. Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary, who was also in attendance at the protest site, sought a CBI inquiry in the case.

Jayant Chaudhary on the attack against Bhim Army chief

Addressing the protestors on Friday gathered at the Jantar Mantar to extend support to Chandrashekhar Azad, the RLD leader demanded a CBI inquiry into the attack on the Bhim Army chief. He said every youth in the country who is a firm believer in the constitution has a Mahatma Gandhi within him, refusing to tolerate violence in any form. “We all have Baba Bhimrao Ambedkar, Sardar Patel, and Chaudhary Charan Singh residing inside us. All we need to do is awaken our inner beings for the greatness to come out,” he said. Chaudhary further added the exploitation of minorities and the poor shall not be tolerated, assuring stern action against those who partake in such activities. The RLD leader called Chandrashekhar Azad brave and bold, informing he dialled the Bhim Army chief to inquire about his health post the attack.

Attack on the entire community

The Azad Samaj Party, in a statement, said the attack was not on an individual but on the entire Bahujan community. “This is a part of a larger pattern where the Opposition has been under continual threat in the country either through the misuse of government machinery like ED, and CBI or through violent means such as this,” it said. “Despite repeated appeals to the Central Government and the State Government of Uttar Pradesh, with proof that Chandrashekhar Azad is in dire risk, the authorities refused to grant him the required security,” the statement added.
