S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, spoke during the General Debate on Tuesday at the high-level United Nations General Assembly meeting taking place in New York. He greeted the audience with “Namaste from Bharat” before highlighting the extraordinary crisis that is currently engulfing the entire world. According to him, the Delhi G20 Declaration reaffirmed that the only workable answers are diplomacy and dialogue.
Jaishankar’s Assertive Message
He said “The days when a few nations set the agenda and expected others to fall in line are over.” Jaishankar met with the senior UN officials in New York to address the Security Council changes, the G20 presidency of India, local and global concerns, and sustainable development goals. S Jaishankar met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and 78th General Assembly President Dennis Francis on Monday at the UN’s global headquarters the day before his UNGA speech.
Strengthening India’s G20 Presidency
Achim Steiner, the administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, was another person he met with. It was a joy, according to Jaishankar, to meet with Guterres, and they spoke about the ways in which India’s G20 Presidency has bolstered the UN’s sustainable development agenda. “We have coordinated closely in this regard over the last year,” Jaishankar wrote on X.
Guterres and Jaishankar Discuss Global Issues and UN-India Cooperation
He added on X that he admired Guterres’ steadfast dedication to revamping global financial institutions. India’s cooperation with the UN and its leadership of the G20 were both praised by Guterres in a readout of the meeting provided by the UN spokesperson’s office .According to the statement, Guterres and Jaishankar also spoke about other global issues, including the conditions in Afghanistan and Myanmar.
