External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is likely to win unopposed in the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections. He is among the 11 leaders who will enter the Upper House without contesting any elections.
Six TMC leaders entered the Rajya Sabha unopposed last Saturday, These are Derek O’Brien, Sukhendushekhar Roy, Dola Sen, Saket Gokhale, Samirul Islam and Prakash Chik Baraik.
Trinamool Congress didn’t renominate Sushmita Dev and Shanti Chetri for new terms;these members will retire in July this year.
BJP will increase its numbers
Bharatiya Janata Party has 70 members in the West Bengal Assembly and will be able to send one member, in this case Anant Maharaj, to the Rajya Sabha unopposed.
Four other seats will see no voting on July 24. Three seats in Gujarat and one seat in Goa won’t have any elections.

In Goa, BJP’s state unit chief Sadanand Shet Tanavade has filed papers for Rajya Sabha.
The party will gain one more seat in the Rajya Sabha after the July 24 elections and grow its tally to 93. However, the NDA (which comprises the BJP and its allies) will still fall short of the majority in the 245-member Upper House.
Majority is crucial
Seven seats will fall vacant in the Rajya Sabha after July 24. These include 4 seats from Jammu and Kashmir, two nominated members and one from Uttar Pradesh.
With this, the actual strength of the Rajya Sabha will come down to 138, and the half-way mark would be 119. BJP and its allies would have 105 members in this case.
Getting a simple majority in the Rajya Sabha is crucial for the BJP as this will help the party to pass the Delhi Ordinance.
Aam Aadmi Party has convinced several opposition parties to oppose this ordinance.
