Bangladesh Unrest: Recently, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has updated the situation in Bangladesh before the Rajya Sabha regarding the continuous efforts by the Indian government in supporting its citizens and monitoring developments in the region.
Indian Nationals in Bangladesh
He disclosed that there were about 19,000 Indian nationals in Bangladesh, of whom about 9,000 are students. Most of these students returned to India by July, he said. He added that through the diplomatic missions, continuous close contact with the Indian community in every respect is maintained to help ensure their safety and well-being by the Indian government.
He also reacted to the situation of minorities in Bangladesh in the wake of ongoing unrest there. He informed that several groups and organizations have become instrumental in protection of minorities in that country, on which the Indian government is keeping a close vigil. Dr. Jaishankar has assured that the Government of India is maintaining deep concern and vigil until order is fully restored in Bangladesh.
Indian Border Forces on High Alert Amidst Bangladesh Crisis
Furthermore, Dr. Jaishankar has informed Parliament that in view of the situation’s complexities, Indian border guarding forces have been put on absolutely high alert. The Dhaka authorities have been kept in contact through continuing messages over the past 24 hours, keeping themselves apprised about the evolution of events and coordinating any action that may be required.
The minister’s statements reassured Indian nationals living abroad of the commitment to their security and containment of the larger fallout of the situation in Bangladesh on regional stability.
