Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan was released from the Sitapur jail in Uttar Pradesh on Friday morning, a day after the Supreme Court granted him interim bail in an alleged cheating case.
Khan’s son and MLA Abdullah Azam, Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohiya) leader Shivpal Singh Yadav and a large number of supporters welcomed the senior SP leader upon his release.
The Supreme Court on Thursday granted interim bail to Azam Khan in the case relating to Kotwali police station in Uttar Pradesh. A bench of justices L Nageswara Rao, BR Gavai, AS Bopanna granted interim bail to Khan, and also granted him the liberty to apply for regular bail before the concerned court within a period of two weeks.
The Supreme Court also assured that the interim bail will be continued until the regular bail is decided by the competent court.
In order to avoid any traffic chaos at the jail gates, Sitapur police had stopped Azam supporters who had reached Sitapur from Sambhal, Moradabad, Rampur, Saharanpur and Meerut in large numbers, along the highway connecting the jail road in Sitapur district.
Azam Khan’s SUV first stopped at former SP MLA Anup Gupta’s house in Sitapur where Azam had breakfast. After a break of about 30 minutes, Azam and his supporters left for Rampur at 8.50am.
