Kolkata Rape Case: After a woman resident doctor was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Bharatiya Janata Party launched a scathing attack on the West Bengal government, sparing none to target but Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The incident sent shockwaves throughout the country, with people from all walks of life crying out for justice for the victim and asking the authorities to be accountable.
BJP MP Sambit Patra Accuses West Bengal Government
BJP MP Sambit Patra launched a scathing attack against the West Bengal government, claiming that it was distorting the heinous crime. Patra stood up for the medical fraternity, declaring, “I stand in solidarity with my doctor community and friends. The barbarism that happened in Bengal was being covered up by the CM herself.” He raised a question about the sudden transfer of 40-50 doctors and also asked whether the Chief Minister was hiding something. It also flayed Mamata Banerjee for holding multiple portfolios like that of Chief Minister, Health Minister, and Home Minister and yet protesting about the incident. “Who is she seeking justice and protection from?” Patra asked, underlining the inconsistencies in the actions of the government.
Patra also raised the issue of the initial explanation made to the victim’s parents, as according to him, the parents were initially told that their daughter had committed suicide. He also mentioned the instances of intimidation against those talking about the case on social media, where police have reportedly served notices and have been exerting pressure on people. Besides, Patra thanked the lawyers representing this case before the Calcutta High Court, giving them credit for working tirelessly against it. Reacting to the frustrations and devastation the justices of the state expressed about the way the state government is handling the case, Patra said, “They have upheld the justice of the country.”
Poonawalla Claims Trinamool Congress Prioritizes Saving Perpetrators Over Justice
BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla also attacked the Mamata Banerjee government and accused it of safeguarding the rapists and of not taking any action to look for the victim. “Everyone in this country is outraged and all are demanding only one thing—that there should be justice. But instead of giving justice, the agenda of the Trinamool Congress government has become that don’t give justice, don’t save the daughter, only save the rapist,” Poonawalla said. He went further to dub the ruling party “Taliban Mujhe Chahiye”, drawing a controversial parallel to the Taliban in his criticism.
CR Kesavan Cites Failure to Uphold Democracy
The outrage has spread to an all-India level as well, with BJP leader CR Kesavan accusing the state government of not being able to sustain democracy and justice. Kesavan pointed out that the hartal of the medical doctors throughout the country was called for today starting from 6 am by the Indian Medical Association. The strike, declared in response to the incident, since its call for support, has been growing with doctors demanding prompt action and punishment.
The case has also caught the attention of BJP MP Sambit Patra, who asked Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra about their ‘silence’ on this issue. Patra said that the Congress leadership is ignoring the condition of the victim and looking at other political affairs. “Will Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visit Kolkata?” Patra asked, challenging them on the issue.
As the investigation continues and the case gains traction, the West Bengal government is facing increasing pressure. Expectations and piles of calls for justice grow louder; the country is watching whether the victim and her family will be delivered justice.
