The Academic Council (AC) meeting on Friday resulted in recent revisions to the BA Political Science course syllabus at Delhi University, including the addition of a chapter on Hindu nationalist hero Veer Savarkar as an elective for the fifth semester.
The current chapter on Mahatma Gandhi’s contributions to India’s freedom struggle has been moved to the seventh semester as a result of this alteration, which is noteworthy.
This is the first time a complete paper on Savarkar will be given in class, according to recent changes in the curriculum that India Today has unique access to.
Some educators expressed objection to the change. The chapter on Mahatma Gandhi was moved to the fourth year of the programme, which offended these instructors even if they are not opposed an elective on VD Savarkar.
This is how the revised units of the elective will look like:
Unit one will include Savarkar and Indian history, Savarkar and the Indian National Movement in Unit two, Hindutva and Hinduism in Unit three Savarkar and Language Issues in India in Unit 4. Further unit five will include Conversions to other religions and unit six will have Untouchability and caste systems
A member of Academic Council, Alok Rajan Pandey said, “Gandhi has now been pushed to the seventh semester, because of the elective on Savarkar. That is the problem. Teach Savarkar by all means, but when it is being done at the cost of Gandhi, we objected to this.”
“Our argument is based on chronology. Since Gandhi came before Savarkar and BR Ambedkar, he should be studied before them,“ he further said.
“Mahatma Gandhi’s contributions to India’s freedom struggle, in caste and abolishing untouchability, are immense. His works cannot be denied,” Prof Pandey added.
“We will raise this issue again at the GNT Executive council meeting on June 9,” the professor mentioned.
Students can choose between a three-year undergraduate degree and a four-year undergraduate course because the university has chosen a four-year curriculum as part of the National Education Policy (NEP). This means that students who choose the three-year programme would be unable to study Mahatma Gandhi.
