The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice DY Chandrachud has recommended the names of seven district judges for appointment as judges in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. These judges include Rupesh Chandra Varshney, Anuradha Shukla, Sanjeev Sudhakar Kalgaonkar, Prem Narayan Singh, Achal Kumar Paliwal, Hridayesh and Arvind Kumar Singh.
The resolution of the Collegium states that on November 23, 2022, the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues, had recommended the elevation of these seven judicial officers as judges in the High Court. The state’s chief minister and governor have endorsed the recommendations and the file was received in the Supreme Court from the Department of Justice on April 7. In the context of the memorandum process, a Supreme Court Judge conversant with the cases of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has been consulted to ascertain the fitness and eligibility of the candidates for elevation to the High Court.
According to the Collegium, for the purpose of assessing the merit and eligibility of the candidates for elevation to the High Court, it has examined the record file, which included the observations made by the Department of Justice as well as the complaints received against the candidates.
Recommendation for the appointment of four judges in the Uttarakhand High Court
In another decision, the Supreme Court Collegium has also recommended the names of a judicial officer and three advocates for appointment as judges in the Uttarakhand High Court. These include judicial officers Vivek Bharti Sharma, advocates Rakesh Thapliyal, Pankaj Purohit and Subhash Upadhyay.
