The Supreme Court has once again strongly reprimanded the central government on the issue of appointments to the posts of tribunals in the country. The court has sought information related to all the appointments from the government in two weeks, as well as warned of running a case of contempt of court against the government.
The Supreme Court has questioned the Central Government that when the names of the candidates have been suggested by the committee, then why these posts have not been appointed till now. Chief Justice NV Ramana said during the hearing that the appointment has been made by the government with the policy of cherry pick. If the list of people already identified has been prepared, then why have they been selected from the wait list.

Responded on behalf of the government that the central government has the right to make appointments accordingly. However, the Chief Justice (CJI) clarified that the names of 41 people were suggested by the committee but only 18 have been appointed. We don’t even know on what basis people have been selected. On the objections by the Supreme Court, the AG said that the government has the right not to accept all the suggestions.
During this, the Chief Justice said that we live in a democratic country, which runs according to the Constitution. In such a situation, you cannot give such an answer. The court was told on behalf of the government that we have looked at all the suggestions, there is no place in the total 6 tribunals. Rather, no suggestion was made regarding the remaining 9 tribunals.
Objecting to the names chosen by the government, the Supreme Court said that if the government has to choose the people according to its own accord, then what is the need of the selection committee. The Chief Justice objected and said that we are very unhappy with the way people have been selected. We interviewed 500 people, out of which 11 were shortlisted but only 4 of them got selected and the rest were selected by the government from the waiting list.
The Supreme Court has now given two weeks to the government to respond to the petition filed regarding the Tribunal Act and other issues. When the issue of shortage of people in different tribunals of the country and deportation of people from one place to another arose in the court, even then the Supreme Court made strict remarks.
The Supreme Court said that there is no person in Hyderabad, the people there have to go to Kolkata. People of Kolkata have to go to Lucknow. The system is completely broken. Any kind of problem can now be removed only by appointing people.
While the Union government has said that the they have Since 2020 we have appointed 84 members to various tribunals. So there are no recommendations pending with it anymore.
