Supreme Court Justice Bela M. Trivedi on Tuesday recused herself from hearing Bilkis Bano’s plea against the acquittal of 11 people convicted of gang rape in the 2002 Gujarat riots. The matter was listed before a bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi and Bela Trivedi.

As soon as the bench of Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice Bela M. Trivedi started hearing the matter, Justice Rastogi said that his fellow justices would not like to hear the matter.
A bench headed by Justice Rastogi ordered, ‘This matter be placed before a bench which does not include one of our judges.’ However, the bench did not mention any reason behind Justice Bela Trivedi recusing himself from the hearing. In the petition, Bano said that the release of all the convicts is like a shock.
Bilkis’ plea, filed through advocate Shobha Gupta, said the premature release of all the convicts came as a shock not only to the petitioner, her daughters, her family, but also to the society at national and international level.
On the release of the culprits, people of all sections expressed anger and expressed disappointment. Describing the release order as mechanical, the petition states that the premature release of the convicts has shaken the conscience of the society.
Bilkis Bano said that she is disappointed and disturbed by the sudden release of the culprits. The culprits had done extreme level of cruelty with them.
