Kolkata Rape Case: The horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital have been brought before the Supreme Court suo motu, marking a crucial development in the case. The August 9 incident sparked off a nationwide fury that resulted in numerous strikes and protests by medical professionals.
Nationwide Outcry Over Medical Professional’s Safety
The tragic death of the young doctor has sparked nationwide outrage, with protests erupting in various parts of the country. Medical professionals, led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), have expressed their deep concerns over the safety of their colleagues, particularly women, who are often left vulnerable in their workplaces. The IMA has been at the forefront of the protests, demanding justice for the victim. In a strong show of solidarity, they called for a nationwide strike, suspending all non-essential medical services for 24 hours.
Supreme Court’s Intervention Amid Public Pressure
Responding to the growing public outcry and allegations of mishandling by state authorities, a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud is set to hear the matter on Tuesday. The Supreme Court’s intervention comes at a crucial time, with the case already under the investigation of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The case has raised serious questions about the safety and protection of medical professionals, especially women, in India.
Demand for Justice and Accountability
The horrific crime occurred in the seminar hall of the state-run hospital, where the trainee doctor was found brutally assaulted and murdered. While a civic volunteer stationed at the hospital has been detained in connection with the crime, the victim’s family and protestors allege that it was a gang rape. They are demanding a thorough investigation to ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice. An autopsy has confirmed that the victim was sexually assaulted before her death.
CBI Investigation and Psychological Assessment of the Accused
As part of the ongoing investigation, the CBI has begun a psychological assessment of Sanjay Roy, the accused in the case. A team of psychological and behavioural analysts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi has arrived in Kolkata to conduct the necessary tests.
