School ordered to be derecognized after 4-year-old’s rape in Hyderabad

On Friday, the Telangana government derecognized a private school in Hyderabad after a case of rape and sexual assault of a four-year-old girl. The driver of the school’s principal assaulted the girl.

P. Sabitha Indra Reddy, Education Minister ordered the Hyderabad District Education Officer to derecognize DAV Public School.

The education minister also asked the officials to make sure that such incidents are not repeated. She said a committee would be constituted to recommend measures to the government to ensure the safety and security of the students in schools.

The committee, which will be headed by the education secretary, will submit its report to the government within a week. She said after the receipt of the report, the government would take appropriate measures for the protection of school children.

The minister instructed DEO to make plans to transfer the students studying at that school to other recognized schools, nevertheless, to ensure that their education would not be impacted. She requested that the DEO take all necessary measures to relieve the parents’ concerns.

The minister of education further urged the authorities to prevent such indentsin the future. She announced the formation of a committee to make recommendations to the government on how to protect school children’s safety and security.

The committee will provide the government with its report within a week. She promised that after the government received the findings, it will take the necessary steps to protect school children.

The order by the minister came three days after police arrested the driver of the school principal, accused of raping and sexually assaulting the LKG student for over two months. The principal was also arrested for negligence.

According to the police, the driver was arrested and sent to jail. He has been booked under sections 376 A and B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 6 read with 5(1)(m) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
