SC’s Scathing Attack on WB Govt on Kolkata Rape Case, Directs CBI to Submit Status Report, Forms National Task Force

Supreme Court Directs CBI to Submit Status Report, Forms National Task Force in Kolkata Rape Case

Supreme Court

Supreme Court on Kolkata Rape Case: After a horrific case of rape and murder in Kolkata involving a 31-year-old trainee doctor, the Supreme Court of India strongly criticized the West Bengal government. The case, which has triggered widespread protests and raised serious concerns about the safety of women doctors, led the SC to take suo moto action. A National Task Force will be established to ensure the safety of medical professionals across the country, and the SC has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to provide a status report during a crucial hearing on the matter.

CJI Slams West Bengal Authorities for Inaction

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) questioned the West Bengal government sharply about how they handled the case. “What was the principal doing?” he asked, expressing his indignation at the hospital administration’s and the local police’s apparent inaction. What are the police doing when the body is brought to the parents late and no formal complaint was filed? What are they doing when a major crime has occurred and the crime scene is in a hospital? letting vandals inside the medical facility?”

Supreme Court Orders CBI to Report on Investigation

The seriousness of the issue and the requirement for a comprehensive, unbiased inquiry are reflected in the SC’s decision to enlist the CBI. The CJI emphasised the significance of accountability in this case by ordering the CBI to submit a thorough status report by Thursday. The court’s order intends to guarantee that individuals responsible are held accountable and to speed up the inquiry.

National Task Force to Develop Safety Protocols

The SC announced the formation of a National Task Force in response to the case’s wider issues. It will be the responsibility of this group to create thorough safety procedures that will safeguard doctors nationwide, both junior and senior. The CJI brought attention to the unfavourable working conditions that many young doctors endure—often lengthy hours without sufficient security. According to him, “if women are not able to go to work and conditions are not safe, we are denying them equality.”

Nationwide Protests Highlight Safety Concerns in the Medical Community

A wave of nationwide protests have been triggered by the Kolkata rape case, with numerous doctors calling for prompt action to protect their safety. Several OPD operations got disrupted by the incident. The steps taken by the SC to address these issues and stop similar tragedies in the future, such as the creation of the National Task Force and the CBI’s engagement, signal a commitment to addressing these concerns and preventing such tragedies in the future.
