G20 Summit: When a Chinese group, which had arrived in Delhi for the G20 Summit last week, declined to have their bags searched by security personnel, a drama ensued, according to police sources. The Taj Palace Hotel is located in Chanakyapuri, the city’s diplomatic district, where the Chinese delegates were staying.
Chinese Delegates Refuse Bag Search, Prompting Tensions
A bag had been delivered to the hotel by a Chinese group. Security requested that the entourage have the luggage searched, but they refused, according to police sources. When the Chinese delegates refused to comply with the police’s repeated requests that they have the luggage checked in accordance with security procedures, a ruckus ensued. According to police sources, the delegation ultimately decided to go back to the Chinese embassy without having the suitcase searched. The bag’s contents are still a mystery. More Chinese delegates showed up later at the hotel and consented without protest to have their baggage searched, according to the police.
Key Concerns Addressed Despite Security Hiccups
The Bharat Mandapam convention centre in Pragati Maidan hosted the G20 Summit from September 9 to 10, while India held the presidency. The fact that the bloc’s members unanimously released a unified statement that addressed a number of important concerns, including the conflict in Ukraine, was generally viewed as a tremendous accomplishment. Premier Li Qiang represented the Chinese side at the G20. Beijing did not give an explanation for why President Xi Jinping opted to forgo the summit.
