Dalit thrashed: A Dalit man in Banaskantha district in Gujarat was allegedly thrashed by a group of people from an upper caste community. They were allegedly irked on seeing him wearing good clothes and goggles. Police had lodged an FIR against seven people in connection with the incident.
The incident took place at Mota village in Palanpur taluka on Tuesday night, May 30, police said on Thursday.
‘Flying high these days’
Reports said the man was standing outside his home on Tuesday morning when a man saw him. He abused the man and threatened to kill him as he was “flying too high these days”, according to the complaint filed by the victim, Jigar Shekhalia.
On the same night, six men from the community found the man standing outside a village temple. Armed with sticks, they approached the complainant and asked him why he was dressed well and wearing goggles. They then thrashed and dragged him behind a dairy parlour, police said.
Mother comes to rescue, beaten
The victim’s mother rushed to save him but she was also assaulted by the group. The accused tore her clothes and threatened to kill her police added. Both the man and his mother were rushed to a hospital and are recovering.
An FIR was lodged against seven people at Gadh police station under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections pertaining to rioting, unlawful assembly, outraging the modesty of a woman, voluntarily causing hurt, using abusive language, etc, reports said.
They were also booked under relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. However, no arrest has been made so far in connection with the incident, police said.
