Bhagat Singh was greatly influenced by the Arya Samaj doctrine, which places a strong emphasis on social reform and pride in one’s country. Singh, at 12 years old, was present when British forces massacred hundreds of defenceless Indian civilians at Jallianwala Bagh. Bhagat Singh was severely traumatised by this incident, which motivated him to devote his life to the struggle for Indian freedom.

Bhagat Singh enrolled at the National College in Lahore in 1923. He excelled in school and received several honours and prizes. He was pulled to the revolutionary cause as well, though, and got involved in a number of anti-colonial activities. Bhagat Singh established the Naujawan Bharat Sabha, a group for young people that promoted violent resistance to British authority, in 1926. He also joined the militant revolutionary organisation known as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA).

Public outcry prevented him from being executed despite receiving a death sentence.
