A Solemn Tribute on Bhagat Singh’s 116th Birth Anniversary
On this, Thursday, September 28, the 116th anniversary of his birth, we honour his tremendous sacrifice and celebrate his legacy. On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi published a video on the social media platform X as a mark of respect. He Wrote in the Tweet, “Remembering Shaheed Bhagat Singh on his birth anniversary. His sacrifice and unwavering dedication to the cause of India’s freedom continue to inspire generations. A beacon of courage, he will forever be a symbol of India’s relentless fight for justice and liberty.”
Bhagat Singh’s Early Life and Influences
On September 28, 1907, in Banga, Punjab (modern-day Pakistan), Bhagat Singh was born. His grandpa was incarcerated for his anti-colonial efforts, and his family was politically active. Singh attended the Arya Samaj-affiliated Dayanand Anglo-Vedic High School. Bhagat Singh was greatly influenced by the Arya Samaj doctrine, which places a strong emphasis on social reform and pride in one’s country. Singh, at 12 years old, was present when British forces massacred hundreds of defenceless Indian civilians at Jallianwala Bagh. Bhagat Singh was severely traumatised by this incident, which motivated him to devote his life to the struggle for Indian freedom.
Bhagat Singh enrolled at the National College in Lahore in 1923. He excelled in school and received several honours and prizes. He was pulled to the revolutionary cause as well, though, and got involved in a number of anti-colonial activities. Bhagat Singh established the Naujawan Bharat Sabha, a group for young people that promoted violent resistance to British authority, in 1926. He also joined the militant revolutionary organisation known as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA).

Bhagat Singh was put to death by the British government at the age of 23, yet his legacy lives on and continues to motivate people.
Bhagat Singh’s Bold Act of Resistance
In the Lahore Bombing of 1928, Bhagat Singh and his accomplices detonated bombs within the Delhi Central Legislative Assembly. The bombing was carried out to oppose British control, not to cause harm to anyone. Bhagat Singh was detained and found guilty of the bombing in Lahore. Public outcry prevented him from being executed despite receiving a death sentence. In order to demand better treatment for political prisoners, Bhagat Singh and his supporters went on a hunger strike in prison in 1930. The 63-day hunger strike attracted a lot of media attention. Bhagat Singh and his friends Rajguru and Sukhdev were executed by the British administration on March 23, 1931. India experienced a wave of demonstrations and violence following their execution.
