Sharad Pawar: Sharad Pawar declared on Tuesday that he would be resigning from his position as leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and that he would no longer run for office.
Would no longer run in elections
‘I still have three years left on my Rajya Sabha term.’ At the launch of the second edition of his autobiography, “Lok Maze Sangati,” the NCP leader, who founded the party in 1999, announced that he would no longer run in elections. ‘My political career began on May 1, 1960. We commemorated May Day yesterday. One must consider stopping someplace after such a drawn-out political career. Gluttony is not acceptable.’

Following his announcement, a number of NCP leaders and members stood up and chanted slogans urging the NCP supremo to reconsider his choice. ‘We disagree with Saheb’s judgement. We implore you to take it back. Until you take action, we won’t move,’ an NCP leader was overheard saying. Pawar suggested that a committee made up of senior NCP leaders be established to decide the best course of action moving forward. ‘The committee would include, Praful Patel, Rajesh Tope, Sunil Tatkare, P C Chacko, Supriya Sule, Ajit Pawar, Jayant Patil, Chhagan Bhujabl, Dilip walse-Patil, Anil Deshmukh, Jitendra Awhad, Hasan Mushrif, Dhananjay Munde, Narhari Zirwal, Jaydev Gaikwad and chiefs of party frontal cells,’ Pawar added. Pawar’s declaration comes weeks after party commotion was caused by suspicions that his nephew Ajit Pawar may have defected to the BJP-led government in Maharashtra.
