Five rituals to follow on Sarva Pitru Amavasya
1. Donating
To seek favour from your forebears during Pitru Amavasya, engage in acts of benevolence. Following your morning observances and devotions, contemplate charitable contributions. On this significant occasion, customary offerings include white clothing, bananas, white flowers, black sesame seeds, and yogurt, which should be presented to a Brahmin.
2. Offering water and black sesame
Honor your ancestors by making water offerings to them, employing black sesame seeds, kusha grass, white blossoms, and rice. Use the front portion of the kusha grass to offer water to your forebears, a ritual believed to appease them.
3. Panchabali Karma
Panchabali Karma is a traditional Amavasya ritual in which a portion of food is offered to various creatures, including crows, cows, dogs, ants, and more. This ritual is based on the belief that by providing food to these creatures, ancestors can receive nourishment through this symbolic act.
4. Brahmin Food
After performing the Shradh rituals on Sarva Pitru Amavasya, it is a customary practice to organize a feast for Brahmins. This feast is prepared as an offering to please and honor one’s ancestors. It typically consists of dishes like kheer (rice pudding), puri (fried bread), and pumpkin curry. There is a religious belief that serving this meal to Brahmins brings satisfaction to the ancestors. The food prepared for the Shraddha feast often includes ingredients such as black sesame, mustard, barley, peas, and other specific items that hold significance in these rituals.
5. Worshipping Peepal Tree
Sarva Pitru Amavasya offers an opportunity to perform a unique ritual of worshiping the Peepal tree, which is believed to symbolize the dwelling place of the divine Trinity. Start your day with your usual morning routines and then show reverence to the Peepal tree by watering its roots. In the evening, light a lamp fueled by mustard oil beneath the Peepal tree, ensuring it faces the south direction. This act is considered auspicious and holds significance during this observance.
