Shradh 2023: Pitru Paksha, alternatively called Mahalaya Paksha, is a 16-day period dedicated to paying homage and expressing gratitude to deceased ancestors by their descendants. It occurs during the Krishna Paksha of the Bhadrapada month in the Hindu Calendar.
This year, Pitru Paksha Shraddha commenced on September 29 and will extend until October 14, 2023. Rituals such as Tarpan and Pind Daan are observed during this period as a way of honouring and remembering the ancestors. Additionally, offerings of food are made to them, and family members engage in acts of charity in their honour. There has been an ongoing debate regarding whether it is allowed to trim or cut one’s hair, nails, and beard during Pitru Paksha.
Why one should avoid cutting hair, beard or nails during Shradh?
In Hinduism, deceased ancestors hold a revered status akin to deities, and their influence significantly impacts the family. It is believed that when ancestral souls are content, the family experiences prosperity, peace, and success. Conversely, if the ancestors are displeased, it can lead to Pitru Dosh, bringing obstacles and challenges into the family’s life. Thus, observing Pitru Paksha is regarded as crucial.
Traditionally, it has been discouraged to shave hair, trim the beard, or cut nails during Pitru Paksha, and there is a narrative that explains why.
In the Mahabharata’s Anusandhan Parva, Bhishma mentioned the significance of Pitru Paksha. To appease the ancestors, rituals like Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan are recommended. Pitru Paksha is also seen as a period of mourning, during which adopting a simple lifestyle and engaging in acts of charity are considered important for the peace and salvation of ancestral souls.
Historically, activities such as haircuts, shaving, and nail care are associated with personal grooming and enhancing one’s appearance. Since Pitru Paksha is a time of mourning, indulging in such grooming practices is viewed as inappropriate. It is believed that these actions displease the ancestors, causing them anger and bringing inauspiciousness and problems into one’s life. However, it’s important to note that adherence to these practices is a matter of personal faith, and individuals have the freedom to choose whether to follow them or not.
What more to avoid during Shradh?
Additionally, during Pitru Paksha, consumption of Tamasic (impure) foods is avoided out of respect for the ancestors. Family members refrain from consuming addictive substances and non-vegetarian foods during this period, as a sign of reverence in the absence of their forefathers. Furthermore, auspicious events like housewarming ceremonies, weddings, new purchases, and religious or cultural celebrations are typically not organized during Pitru Paksha, as it is considered a time of solemn remembrance and reflection on one’s ancestors.
