SM Krishna, one of Karnataka’s most prominent leaders and a visionary behind Bengaluru's transformation into India’s tech hub, passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 92. Known for his sharp political acumen and focus on development, Krishna had been unwell for some time, as confirmed by family sources.
Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli village of Mandya district, Karnataka, SM Krishna’s journey was marked by remarkable achievements. After completing his education at Maharaja’s College in Mysore and Bengaluru's Government Law College, he pursued further studies in the United States. His academic pursuits included time at Southern Methodist University and George Washington University. Krishna also served as a professor of international law in Bangalore before stepping into politics.
SM Krishna's Political Career Spanning Decades of Service
Krishna’s political career began in 1962 when he won the Maddur assembly seat as an independent candidate. Over the decades, he held key roles, including Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, Union Minister, and Member of Parliament. His tenure as Karnataka’s Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004 is remembered as a golden era for the state.
Legacy of a Leader Who Shaped Modern Bengaluru
It was during his tenure as Chief Minister that Bengaluru earned its nickname, “Silicon Valley of India.” SM Krishna prioritised the IT sector, creating a favorable environment for tech companies to thrive. His government’s establishment of the Bangalore Agenda Task Force (BATF) brought experts together to craft a futuristic development plan for the city. Bengaluru’s global reputation as a leading technology hub can be traced back to these visionary efforts.
Krishna also served as India’s External Affairs Minister from 2009 to 2012 and Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008. In 2017, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after spending over four decades with the Congress. He retired from active politics in 2023, citing his age.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah paid heartfelt tributes to SM Krishna. Many top leaders joined in mourning his loss. His contributions to the IT sector were unparalleled. He will always be remembered as the architect of modern Bengaluru. The nation grieves the passing of this visionary statesman.
