Snowfall Update: Over the hills, severe snowfall has already started; it will intensify significantly from today i.e. January 24 and may last until January 27. This snowfall across the western Himalayas may be this season’s longest and heaviest. On January 22, there were reports of an avalanche in the Lahaul Valley. Due to snowfall and avalanches, Atal Tunnel is closed to traffic.

Yellow alert for snowfall in Himachal Pradesh

In Himachal, Tuesday is expected to bring both significant rain and snowfall. A yellow alert has been issued by the Meteorological Center Shimla due to the state’s recent severe rain and snowfall. This warning is for seven state districts. Shimla, Kangra, Mandi, Kullu, Chamba, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti districts are included in it. In the state’s plain districts, there is a chance of rain. The Meteorological department has released a warning in light of the rain and snow. The public has being urged to pay attention.

In Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban, Bandipore, and Kupwara districts of the state, there is a medium risk of avalanches, while there is a low risk in Baramulla and Ganderbal districts, according to the Disaster Management Authority of Jammu and Kashmir. The districts of Kullu, Lahaul Spiti, Pangi in Chamba, and Kinnaur have all been designated as avalanche prone in Himachal Pradesh.

Several roads blocked due to snowfall

A forecast for increased rain and snowfall across the western Himalayan area, encompassing Jammu and Kashmir, and northwest India between January 24 and 26 was also released on Sunday by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Northwest India is set to see a new western disturbance starting on January 27. Avalanches can also occur in Koksar, Sissu, Tandi, Darcha, Sarchu, Udaipur, Kirting, Chhatru, Batal, and Losar. Up to 223 roads, three of which are highways, remain impassable to vehicles across HP. According to director HP SDMA Sudesh Kumar Mokhta, there are up to 162 roads blocked in Lahaul-Spiti, 30 in Kullu, 10 in Mandi, and 9 in Shimla districts. With a nighttime temperature of -9.6 degrees, Keylong had the coldest conditions, followed by Kukumseri (-7.4 degrees) and Kalpa (-4.8 degrees).
