South Africa passengers to undergo quarantine, testing at Mumbai airport: Mayor Kishori Pednekar

Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar has announced on Saturday that all the passengers coming from South Africa will be rested and quarantined citing the new COVID-19 varient in South Africa.

Variant named Omicron that has been detected in South Africa, Botswana, Hong Kong and Israel.

“People are worried about the new COVID-19 variant. Those people coming from South Africa will be quarantined and genome sequencing will be done with thorough checks,” she said.

Kishori Pednekar added, “Christmas is round the corner and many people from around the world will come to Maharashtra and Mumbai to their families. The BMC is taking all precautionary measures. This variant has become a matter of concern in many countries and hence, we need to be prepared.”

Kishori has urged Mumbai citizens to continue wearing mask and social distancing.

As of now there is no official statement released by BMC on the quarantine rules for the passengers arriving in Mumbai from South Africa.
