Sri Lanka crisis: Elections for a new President to replace the outgoing President Gotabaya Rajapaksa are set to take place in Sri Lanka today amidst the widespread protests against the island nation’s unparalleled economic catastrophe. The race to become Sri Lanka’s ninth president includes Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe, as well as MPs Dullas Alahapperuma and Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition, had earlier withdrawn his name.
Addressing the Parliament, Wickremesinghe said that the island nation has big challenges ahead. “The country is in a very difficult situation, we have big challenges ahead,” Wickremesinghe said, Reuters quoted.
India, on Wednesday denied claims of interfeering in Sri Lanka’s Presidential elections. “We have seen baseless and purely speculative media reports about efforts at the political level from India to influence political leaders regarding elections in the Sri Lankan Parliament to the post of the President,” the Indian High Commission in Colombo said in a tweet. The clarification came shortly after the Sri Lankan Parliament elected Ranil Wickremesinghe as the next President of the island nation.
