Star sprinter Hima Das was on Friday inducted as Deputy Superintendent of Assam Police in the presence of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and described the moment as a childhood dream coming true.
Hima was handed the appointment letter by Sonowal, also a former Union Sports Minister, at a ceremony attended by the top functionaries of the state government as well as from the police department, including the Director General of police.
Assam Police’s official Twitter handle posted a video of the ceremony in which Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, DGP, Assam Police, felicitated the star sprinter. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was also present at the ceremony. “Welcome Aboard! Heartiest Congratulations to @HimaDas8 and all 597 newly selected Sub Inspectors of Assam Police. Together, we’ll write a new saga of people friendly policing in the State, to serve the citizens of Assam,” the video was captioned.
The Assam CM tweeted, saying it is a proud day for the state and Hima Das’ appointment will encourage youth of the country to pursue excellence in sports.
The Asian Games silver-medallist and junior world champion said she will continue to strive for excellence in her sport alongside her job in state police.
“I got everything due to sports, I will try to work for betterment of sports in the state and try to make Assam one of the best performing states in the country, like Haryana,” she said.
“I will diligently work for Assam police but I must say sport will never take a back seat.”
Apart from Hima Das, 597 newly selected Sub Inspectors were also given away appointment letters during the ceremony.
Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal said, “I believe the newly recruited SIs will give their best in service of the people and help us create a more peaceful Assam and a smarter Assam Police. You have shown that merit is the norm for Assam and you will be glowing examples for the youth and the society.”
