Supreme Court backs openly gay lawyer Saurabh Kirpal for judge in Delhi High Court

The Supreme Court collegium has stood strong on its decision to appoint senior advocate Saurabh Kirpal as judge of a constitutional court. A three-member Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, and also comprising Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, said Kirpal’s appointment as a judge was pending for five years. “His appointment will add value to the Bench of the Delhi High Court and provide inclusion and diversity,” the Collegium said.

The Supreme Court website says, “In this backdrop, the Collegium resolves to reiterate its recommendation dated 11 November 2021 for appointment of Shri Saurabh Kirpal as a Judge of the Delhi High Court which needs to be processed expeditiously”.

Kirpal was recommended by Delhi High Court earlier

“His appointment will add value to the Bench of the Delhi High Court and provide inclusion and diversity,” the Collegium underscored.

Mr. Kirpal’s name was recommended five years ago by the Delhi High Court Collegium, in October 2017. Kirpal was designated as a senior advocate by the Delhi high court after all its 31 judges unanimously endorsed his designation.
