Supreme Court Declines to Halt NEET-UG 2024 Counselling Amid Allegations of Irregularities

Supreme Court Refuses to Halt NEET-UG 2024 Counselling and Issues Notice to NTA on NEET Exam Controversy

Supreme Court of India

Despite growing claims of question paper leaks and other anomalies, the Supreme Court of India declined to halt the ongoing NEET-UG 2024 counselling process in a landmark ruling on Friday. In response to petitions for a probe, cancellation, and retake of the NEET-UG exam, a vacation bench of the highest court has sent a notice to the National Testing Agency (NTA). The next hearing, which the court has set for July 8, 2024, will address these new pleas in addition to the outstanding petitions.

Background of the NEET-UG 2024 Controversy

Approximately 24 lakh candidates took part in the NEET-UG 2024 exam, which was held on May 5, 2024, across 4,750 centres. The results were originally scheduled to be announced on June 14, but the announcement was made earlier on June 4 owing to the quick completion of answer sheet evaluations.

Supreme Court’s Response to Pleas and Probes

Regarding several petitions, the Supreme Court had previously requested comments from the NTA, the Centre, and other relevant parties on Thursday. These petitions seek that the NEET-UG 2024 test be discontinued and that the purported anomalies be the subject of a court-monitored inquiry. The court’s order also included a stay of related cases that were still pending in several high courts.

The Supreme Court underlined that the NEET-UG 2024 counselling procedure will go forward as scheduled in spite of these events. This ruling demonstrates the court’s position that the admissions process for prospective medical students should continue while the severe claims are investigated further through the judicial system.

Next Steps and Legal Proceedings

The upcoming hearing on July 8 will be pivotal as the Supreme Court examines the merits of the fresh and pending petitions collectively. The court’s notice to the NTA indicates a thorough investigation into the allegations surrounding the NEET-UG 2024 exam, ensuring transparency and fairness in the process.
