On Tuesday, the Gauhati High Court’s decision staying the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections was upheld by the Supreme Court.

On a plea challenging the June 25 High Court order, a panel of Justices Aniruddha Bose and S V Bhatti issued notices to the Union Sports Ministry, Wrestling Federation of India, Assam Wrestling Association, and others.

A third party appeared before the High Court on Sunday and obtained the matter’s stay, the counsel representing the petitioner, the Andhra Pradesh Amateur Wrestling Association, informed the bench. He said that the Wrestling Federation elections were being postponed.

The High Court ruling was then stayed after the bench issued notice.

The Assam Wrestling Association’s appeal will now be heard on July 28 at the next hearing date set by the High Court on Monday.

The Assam Wrestling Association (AWA) had filed a plea requesting the opportunity to participate in the election process, and the Gauhati High Court had granted the AWA’s request to suspend the WFI elections from being held on July 11.

Despite the national federation’s Executive Committee’s decision on November 15, 2014, the state association’s argument that it was entitled to be an associated member of the WFI with voting rights was rejected.

The last day to submit names for the electoral college was June 25, and the Gauhati High Court had stayed the poll.
