Supreme Court: The government should find a means to offer same-sex couples basic social rights such as opening joint bank accounts or naming a partner in insurance policies, the Supreme Court said on Thursday, appearing to acknowledge that legalising gay marriage is a matter for lawmakers. Considering a batch of appeals for the recognition and protection of same-sex marriages, the court has been hearing petitioners who have contended that denying them the right to marry infringed their fundamental rights and resulted in discrimination and exclusion.

And how can we ensure that such relationships are not shunned?” DY Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India, stated.

He did, however, clarify that he does not want to turn the situation into a “government versus judiciary” one.
