Supreme Court’s Stern Warning to Government on Manipur Video, Says ‘Giving you a little time’

Supreme Court

Supreme Court: There has been significant outrage of the two-month-old video showing two women being paraded naked in the violent Manipur. Two ladies from one of the fighting communities are shown in the incident that happened on May 4 being paraded naked by a few guys from the other side. One of the ladies was also subjected to a group rape by the mob, and her brother was slain when he tried to intervene. The horrifying tragedy happened just one day after fighting broke out in Manipur between the Meitei, a valley-dwelling tribe, and the Kuki, a hill-dwelling tribe, over the Meiteis’ quest for Scheduled Tribes (ST) classification.

Vows Justice and No Impunity for Culprits

Political figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had strong opinions in response to the film, saying that “what happened to the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven.” In his first comments on Manipur since ethnic violence erupted in the state more than two months ago, PM Modi vowed that “the law will act with its full might” and that those responsible wouldn’t get off scot-free.

Supreme Court Denounces Manipur Tragedy

The Manipur event was denounced by the Supreme Court today, who referred to it as “deeply disturbing” and stated the images displayed “gross constitutional failure.” The Chief Justice warned that the Supreme Court would take up the case on July 28 if the government didn’t take action. A bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud referred to it as “simply unacceptable” and ordered the federal government and the state government to take immediate action and inform the Supreme Court of their progress. “We will give a little time to the government to act otherwise we will take action if nothing is happening on the ground,” the bench said. “Using women as an instrument is not acceptable. We are of the view that the court must be apprised of the steps taken by the government so that perpetrators are booked for such violence. What is portrayed in the media and visuals which appeared shows gross constitutional violation,” D Y Chandrachud said.
