Swiggy: Ahead of International Biryani Day on July 2, the online food-delivery platform Swiggy has released figures surrounding their most ordered food item. Swiggy has revealed that the Biryani has been delivered 7.6 crore times in the last 12 months. India’s love affair with Biryani traces its origin to royal cook houses of Indo-Muslim sultanates. There are various theories regarding origin of dish but most sources trace it to the royal kitchens of Mughals.
On Swiggy’s platform over 2.6 lakh restaurants offer biryani and more than 28 thousand restaurants claim to specialise in the dish.
Swiggy reveals astonishing numbers
As per the data revealed by Swiggy the order for Biryani is placed 219 times per minute. The dish has multiple localized specialties across the country that include spicy Hydrebad Dum Biryani, aromatic Lucknowi Birayni, to varied flavors and taste of Kolkata and Bengal Birayni.
The official statement released by Swiggy read “From the aromatic Lucknowi Biryani to the spicy Hyderabadi Dum Biryani, and from the flavourful Kolkata Biryani to the fragrant Malabar Biryani, people across the country placed 219 orders per minute for their favourite dish.”
Biryani’s love by numbers
Although it is impossible to country’s love for Biryani, figures revealed by Swiggy peaks into Biryani craze in major metropolises in the country. The city of Bengaluru remains on top with 28,000 outlets under Swiggy’s belt. Mumbai follows suit with 22,000 restaurants while Delhi has around 20,000 restaurants offering their service through Swiggy’s outlet.
When it comes to number of times the dish was ordered Hydrebad comes on top with 72 lakhs orders till June this year. Bengaluru ordered the dish around 50 lakhs times and Chennai stands at the third place with almost 30 lakhs orders.
Dum Biryani s the most popular flavour with 62 lakh orders in its 85 variants. Biryani rice comes at second with 35 lakhs orders while Hyderabadi Biryani secures third place with 28 lakhs orders.
Swiggy revealed that a Biryani lover in Chennai spent around Rs. 31,532 on a single order of biryani.
