Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday took to Twitter to pay tribute to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee, on the occasion of his 120th birth anniversary. Calling Mookerjee a remarkable scholar and intellectual, the Prime Minister said that he devoted his life towards India’s unity and progress.
“I bow to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his Jayanti. His lofty ideals motivate millions across our nation. Dr Mookerjee devoted his life towards India’s unity and progress. He also distinguished himself as a remarkable scholar and intellectual,” the PM tweeted.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called Mookerjee’s life ‘awe-spiring’ and said that hsi struggles to keep India as one nation are phenomenal.
“Dr.Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s was an awe-inspiring life. His struggles to keep India as one nation both in the northern and eastern flanks in the years before & after 1947 are phenomenal. Many other achievements in the short span of his life are immensely motivating. Pay respects,” she said in a tweet.
“The pioneer of ‘One Nation, One Mark, One Legislation’, for Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, there was nothing above national interest. His sacrifice and struggle for the integrity of India kept Kashmir and Bengal an integral part of the country. Dr. Mukherjee was a staunch supporter of indigenous policies in nation building,” tweeted Home Minister Amit Shah in Hindi.
Mookerjee was born on July 6, 1901. A politician, barrister and academician, he was the independent India’s first Minister of Industry and Supply and founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He died after 40 days of being arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir State police for entering the state without permit. He passed away in jail under mysterious circumstances.
