For forcibly organising a child marriage in Thanjavur village of Tamil Nadu, the police have arrested six people in this case.
According to media reports – A minor boy and girl were forced to marry after a group of villagers ‘discovered them to be lovers’.
The age of minor boy is only 17 year while the age of girl is only 16. Both the boy and girl are of same school. On Monday night, boy with his friend, had gone to the girl’s house . A few people of that villagers noticed them talking together around 12.30 am.
After knowing that they are lovers, the villagers discuss the matter with their parents. The villagers then forced the parents to get them married.
On Tuesday under villagers pressure the parents decided to organise got the child marriage around 3 am at a temple.
When this incident came into light the panchayat union welfare officer of Thiruvonam, Kamala Devi, informed the case to the police. After the police held an inquiry and six people were arrested for forcing the minors to marry.

According to media reports – ‘Those arrested were identified as Raja, 51, Ayyavu, 55, Raman, 62, Gopu, 38, Nadimuthu, 40, and Kanniyan, 50. The boy was sent to a juvenile home in Thanjavur, while the girl was sent to a government home.’
As per the police all accused were charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and provisions of the Prohibition of the Child Marriage Act.
It is being told that further investigations are underway.
