On Wednesday, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistan Taliban, initiated a significant military offensive in the Chitral district of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. According to reports, the TTP overran several villages in the area, resulting in the loss of several Pakistani security personnel.
A key TTP commander communicated about the operation
A key TTP commander communicated about the operation, describing it as a “large-scale” offensive that commenced at 4 am local time. Poor internet connectivity in the region temporarily hindered the dissemination of visual evidence. Various posts on social media platforms also reported clashes between Pakistani forces and the TTP along the Durand Line, leading to the temporary closure of the Torkham border crossing.
These posts further asserted that multiple Pakistani security personnel had been killed during the confrontations. As of now, the Pakistani media has not reported on these incidents.
TTP spokesman Muhammad Khurasani issued a statement reassuring the people of Chitral, urging them to remain calm and stating that the TTP’s conflict was primarily directed against what they deemed “usurping and oppressive security agencies.”
Unconfirmed videos shared on social media purportedly showed TTP militants entering the Chitral district, along with unverified footage depicting captured Pakistani soldiers.
However, a senior Pakistani security official contradicted the TTP’s claims, asserting that the militants had not taken control of any areas.
It’s worth noting that the TTP declared an all-out war against the Pakistani military in November 2022, with the aim of establishing Sharia laws in Pakistan. In recent times, Pakistan has witnessed an escalation of terrorist activities attributed to the TTP, which is believed to have close ties to al-Qaida. The group has been held responsible for numerous deadly attacks across Pakistan, including the recent killing of a Pakistan Army Major and a soldier during an intelligence-based operation, as well as a suicide attack that claimed the lives of nine Pakistani soldiers in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
