Everyone knows and understands what a huge contribution the Green Revolution has made to the progress of our country. MS Swaminathan, the father of this Green Revolution, has also been praised all over the world for the progress of India. Today Swaminathan is seen as a source of inspiration in the field of agriculture. But the recent news is also full of sadness for the country because MS Swaminathan, known as the “Father of the Green Revolution” in India, died on Thursday at the age of 98 in Chennai.
MS Swaminathan died at 11 a.m.
He created the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) in 1988 as a non-profit trust using the earnings of his 1987 First World Food Prize. According to an institute official, he died at 11 a.m. He was designated the first World Food Prize winner for creating and pioneering the introduction of high-yielding wheat and rice varieties into India during the 1960s when the nation faced severe starvation. He was born in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district.
DR. Soumya Swaminathan took over MSSRF
Swaminathan collaborated on agricultural policy with the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He attended a number of prominent international conferences, notably the United Nations World Food Congress in Rome in 1974. His daughter, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, who served as the World Health Organization’s (WHO) head scientist from 2019 to 2022, took over as chairwoman of the MSSRF earlier this month.
