Due to low ticket sales and widespread protests, The Kerala Story was taken off from Tamil Nadu theatres. On Wednesday, the police called off a special showing of the movie to which prominent state BJP leaders had been invited.
A special showing of the movie was scheduled for the morning of May 10 in a well-known Chennai preview theatre, and several persons, including senior BJP politicians, were invited to the event. According to reports, 10 to 12 people came to see the unique show.
However, the Chennai Police intervened and halted the performance, alleging concerns with law and order.
The Kerala Story was released on May 5, and by that time there had been a number of violent protest recorded around Tamil Nadu.
Seeman, the head of Naam Tamilar Katchi, had planned a demonstration for May 6 in Chennai during which he demanded that the movie be taken from the screens. He threatened to destroy theatres and screens if the performances went on.
Tamil Nadu theatre owners made the decision to stop showing the movie starting on May 7.
CBFC member reacts on curbs
Vani Tripathi, a member of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), reacted to The Kerala Story’s restrictions in various states, including West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
“You are taking away the democratic right of the audience, which will decide the fate of the film. You cannot decide it, I cannot decide it, even a producer can’t decide (the fate of the film). It will be the people who will decide if the movie talks to them, whether it creates a bridge between then and what filmmakers are saying,” Vani Tripathi was quoted as saying by a news portal.
