The most dangerous time to travel on Indian roads is between 3 and 9 p.m. reveals data

Road Accidents in India: The 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. timeframe has proven to be highly dangerous and fatal on Indian roads, with government data indicating that about 40% of total road accidents registered in 2021 occurred around that time.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ annual report ‘Road Incidents in India — 2021,’ of the total 4.12 lakh accidents documented in 2021, over 1.58 lakh were reported between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The third biggest number of accidents occurred between 3 and 6 p.m.

Further investigation of the data reveals that in 2021, the interval between 6 pm and 9 pm recorded the highest number of road accidents, accounting for around 21% of total incidents in the country, which is consistent with the pattern observed during the previous five years. “Afternoon and evening times are the most dangerous times to be on the road. The time interval of 0.00 hrs to 6:00am has the least number of accidents,” according to the data.

Analyzing the data by state found that Tamil Nadu had the most accidents (14,416) between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., followed by Madhya Pradesh, which had 10,332 incidents. Together with Kerala, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh, these states recorded 82,879 accident cases between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., accounting for more than 52% of all accident cases in India during that time period.

Analyzing the data further reveals that, since 2017, the time between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. has reported more than 35% of overall accidents. In addition, with the exception of 2020, which saw a statewide lockdown due to a coronavirus outbreak, India reported more than 85,000 vehicle accidents between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. each year between 2017 and 2021.

January 2021 recorded the most accidents, while March recorded the maximum deaths

The data on road accidents by month shows that January 2021 had the most road accidents (40,305), followed by March (39,491). However, March had the highest number of road accident deaths (14,579), followed by January (14,575).

Prior to the pandemic, May had the highest number of accidents (41,490) and deaths (14,644) in 2019; 42,730 accidents and 14,368 deaths in 2018, and 42,799 accidents and 14,417 deaths in 2017.

According to the data, the months with the highest number of accidents and fatalities in the last five years (2017 to 2021) were May, June, and March. “However, in 2020 these months reported comparably less number of accidents, which may be due to nationwide lockdown and subsequent restrictions imposed on movements.”
According to the data, 1,53,972 people died in road accidents in India in 2021, the highest number since 2011. That equates to around 422 deaths each day, or approximately 18 deaths per hour. It reveals that there were 4,12,432 traffic accidents in 2021, with 3,84,448 people injured. In 2021, India reported 22,258 more deaths in road accidents than in 2020, a 17% increase.
