During the 2nd International Conference on Green Hydrogen, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed in a video address the vital role that green hydrogen will play in creating a sustainable future. Noting the direct effects of climate change, he emphasised that urgent action is needed to address the issues, with energy transition and sustainability at the forefront of international policy talks.
India’s Commitment to Green Energy
India has become a global pioneer in renewable energy, and PM Modi announced with pride that the country had met its goals under the Paris Agreement nine years ahead of schedule 2030 target. PM Modi emphasised India’s outstanding achievements over the last ten years, including a startling 3,000% increase in solar energy and a 300% increase in the nation’s potential for non-fossil fuels. He did stress that there is still more work to be done, with India concentrating on advancing current initiatives and investigating novel ideas like green hydrogen.
Green Hydrogen: The Future of Energy
The Prime Minister praised green hydrogen as a promising addition to the world energy mix, pointing out that it has the ability to decarbonise sectors like steel, heavy-duty transportation, fertilisers, and refineries that are challenging to electrify. Green hydrogen can also be used as a way to store extra renewable energy. PM Modi also spoke about the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which will be introduced in 2023 and intends to establish India as a major hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen worldwide.
Investments, Innovation, and Global Cooperation
PM Modi outlined the various investments being made in research and development, industry-academia partnerships, and the encouragement of start-ups in the Green Hydrogen sector. He highlighted the government’s commitment to developing a green job ecosystem, with a special focus on skill development for India’s youth.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of international partnerships to scale up production, reduce costs, and build infrastructure for Green Hydrogen. Reflecting on the G20 Summit in New Delhi, he mentioned the adoption of five high-level voluntary principles on hydrogen, providing a unified global roadmap for the sector.
Global Efforts for a Sustainable Future
PM Modi called on the scientific community and subject matter specialists to take the lead in tackling issues with the production of green hydrogen. He urged scientists to investigate methods for enhancing electrolysers, producing green hydrogen from saltwater and municipal wastewater, and increasing the usage of green hydrogen in inland waterways, shipping, and public transportation. PM Modi expressed hope that events such as the 2nd International Conference on Green Hydrogen will contribute to the advancement of international efforts in this area.
