Supreme Court Chief Justice SA Bobde has commented on the petition of a female lawyer. He said that now the time has come that women should also be CJIs. He said that no discrimination is done on our behalf.
In fact, recently, a woman lawyer has filed a petition demanding proper participation of women as judges of the High Court. He said that the proportion of women in the judiciary is only 11 percent, which is very low.
In the last 71 years of functioning of the Supreme Court, only eight out of 247 judges were women. At present, Justice Indira Banerjee is the only woman judge in the Supreme Court. The first woman judge was Fatima Biwi, who was appointed in 1987.
CJI SA Bobde made this comment on a petition by a female lawyer, demanding that talented lawyers be given place in the appointment of judges. The petition said that the ratio of women to judiciary is only 11%, which is very low.
In fact, CJI SA Bobde refused to issue notice on the petition filed by the women lawyers during the case of appointing adhoc judges to settle the pending cases in the upper courts. The petition demanded that an amendment in the MOP should be made to appoint women as judges.
The CJI said that we had tried a lot while being the Chief Justice of the High Court, but the woman lawyer who would have been asked would say that the responsibility of the children is the responsibility of the house, thus there are many problems in appointing a female judge. The CJI said that you do not worry, the time has come that the Chief Justice of India will be a woman.
On the appointment of women judges in the High Court, Chief Justice of India SA Bobde said, “Why only in the High Court? Why not the first woman Chief Justice of India? Why can’t it be right now? The collegium always discusses the issue of representation. ”
Justice SA Bobde told the female lawyer Sneha Kalitha during the hearing, “There are many instances in the country when women lawyers have rejected proposals to become judges citing various domestic responsibilities including education of their children. But this does not mean that it is true for everyone. We completely agree with you about being a woman judge. We have an interest in women becoming judges. We want to implement it in the best way. No change is required. Only we need competent candidates. “
